In September 2002 Microsoft-Yugoslavia has announced it will publish a Serbian
version (local version) of the Windows XE Professional operating system and
the forthcoming new version of Office 11.
This is the good news. There is, however, a major shortcoming in
that this Serbian version
will not be utilizing the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet.
The implications of this are enormous. The new generations of youngsters
in Serbia will all be computer literate and trained on the Windows XE OS,
but will not be exposed to the Cyrillic Alphabet. This will greatly
contribute to the abandonment of the Serbian language in its original form. The
Cyrillic Alphabet and part of the Serbian culture will be lost.
A web site has been created for the sole purpose of preventing this from happening. There
is also a petition to be signed to the above effect, which will be presented
